A winter experience for photographers from 21 December to 6 January

Venice changes when winter arrives. The light becomes softer, the streets grow quieter and the lagoon starts to mirror the sky in a way that feels almost theatrical. December is one of the most inspiring months to photograph the city. Yet most travellers never think of it as a photography destination. This makes the Christmas period a special window for anyone who wants to capture a more intimate version of Venice.

If you are visiting between 21 December and 6 January, I will be running a series of workshops designed for photographers who want to create atmospheric images, learn to work with winter light and experience the city without summer crowds.

Why Christmas in Venice is perfect for photography

Winter gives Venice a calmness that is impossible to find at any other time of year. Scenes that are usually busy become quiet, which allows stronger compositions and slower, more thoughtful shooting.

Long golden hours
The low winter sun stays soft for much longer, which means more time to work with gentle shadows and warm tones.

Moody conditions
Fog, reflections, soft rain, festive lights. These elements add character and depth, especially for black and white photography.

A quieter city
This is the season when locals reclaim the streets. You can photograph Venice in a more authentic way and move around with ease.

Night photography at its best
Festive lights turn the narrow calli into glowing corridors. The atmosphere is magical and perfect for learning how to expose and focus confidently in low light.
