ISTRIA PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCE

Private workshop with Marco Secchi
Standalone experience based in Istria, Croatia . Please ask for departures from Venice or Slovenia

Designed for photographers who want to experience Istria beyond the tourist scene, with a focus on light, atmosphere, timing, and visual storytelling.

OPTION I

The Essence of Istria- 16h Workshop

2 Days / 2 Nights 16H Workshop
Best for clients with limited time who want the strongest locations.

Base: Rovinj or Motovun (recommended)

Rovinj or Motovun provides the ideal base for the workshop, allowing efficient access to both the coastal and interior regions of Istria.

A professional driver with a VIP vehicle is compulsory on both days. This allows complete freedom of movement, efficient access to locations, and the removal of the practical limitations of driving, parking, and navigation. It also allows continuous teaching during transfers.

Day 1 – The Venetian Dawn & Urban Geometry

  • Blue Hour & Sunrise (Rovinj): We begin before first light at the harbour to capture the town's silhouette and the transition of artificial to natural light. Focus on long-exposure water textures and the iconic Adriatic skyline. (in place of the sunset session)

  • Subtractive Composition: Moving into the narrow "Calle" of the Old Town before the crowds arrive. Technical focus on chiaroscuro (high-contrast light), vertical leading lines, and the "decisive moment" of local life.

  • The Intimate Scale (Bale): A session in the quiet stone streets of Bale. We focus on macro textures, medieval doorways, and the geometric discipline of a perfectly preserved historic town.

  • Sunset & Blue Hour: Capturing the evening light from a strategic coastal vantage point, focusing on the intersection of the rugged limestone coast and Venetian walls (in place of the sunrise session)

Day 2 – The Interior Peaks

  • Sunrise in Motovun: An early departure to catch the famous "Fog Sea" of the Mirna Valley. Technical focus on layering, telephoto compression, and atmospheric depth from elevated viewpoints.

  • Grožnjan – The Artist’s View: A session dedicated to street photography and "The Second Look"—finding unique perspectives and minimalist details in a highly textured environment.

  • Pićan – Authenticity & Structure: Exploration of this overlooked hill town. Focus on clean architectural structures and documentary-style photography away from tourist density.

  • Final Wrap-up: A final session based on the best light conditions of the day, concluding the intensive 48-hour cycle and 16-hour workshop

  • Day 3 – Departure

This format presents the strongest coastal and hill-town locations in a compact format.

OPTION II

3 Days / 3 Nights | The Signature Experience - 24h workshop

The ideal balance of depth and intensity. This format allows for a more nuanced exploration of both the Venetian coast and the atmospheric interior.

Day 1 – The Venetian Dawn & Urban Geometry

  • The Dawn Session (Rovinj): We begin before first light at the harbour to capture the town's iconic silhouette. Focus on long-exposure techniques to flatten the Adriatic and emphasise the town’s vertical structure during the blue hour.

  • Subtractive Composition: Navigating the "Calle" (narrow alleys) of the Old Town to master high-contrast light and shadow. We focus on isolating subjects and anticipating the human element in a dense urban environment.

  • The Intimate Scale (Bale): An afternoon session in the quiet, medieval streets of Bale. We focus on stone textures, atmospheric doorways, and the disciplined geometry of a perfectly preserved historic town.

Day 2 – The Interior Heartland

  • Sunrise in Motovun: An early departure for the Mirna Valley. Technical focus on layering, telephoto compression, and capturing the famous "Fog Sea" from elevated vantage points.

  • Grožnjan – The Artist’s View: Dedicated street photography and "The Second Look"—finding unique perspectives and minimalist details in a highly textured environment.

  • Pićan – Authenticity & Structure: Exploration of this overlooked hilltop village. Focus on clean architectural lines and documentary-style photography away from tourist density.

Day 3 – Natural Formations & Technical Refinement

  • The Elevated View (Lim Fjord): A morning session focused on one of Istria’s most distinctive natural formations. We work on layered landscape compositions and the relationship between water, forest, and elevation.

  • Technical Review & Critique: A mid-day session dedicated to reviewing the work produced. We analyze composition, light choice, and "visual voice" to identify strengths and areas for refinement.

  • Alternative Vantage Points: We return to the coast to practice "working a subject," finding new perspectives of the Rovinj peninsula or surrounding archipelago that differ from the Day 1 sunrise.

  • The Final Sunset: A concluding session at a flexible location chosen specifically for the best predicted light and atmospheric conditions of the week.

OPTION III

Istria Photographic Immersion

5 Days / 5 Nights | The Masterclass Portfolio - 40 hours workshop

The full experience is designed for serious photographers. This format allows for "The Second Look"—revisiting locations under shifting conditions to produce portfolio-level work.

Day 1 – The Venetian Dawn & Urban Geometry

  • The Dawn Session (Rovinj): We begin before first light at the harbor to capture the town's silhouette and the transition of artificial to natural light. Focus on long-exposure water textures and the iconic Adriatic skyline.

  • Subtractive Composition: Navigating the narrow "Calle" of the Old Town before the crowds arrive. Technical focus on chiaroscuro (high-contrast light), vertical leading lines, and the "decisive moment" of local life.

  • The Intimate Scale (Bale): An afternoon session in the quiet stone streets of Bale. We focus on macro textures, medieval doorways, and the disciplined geometry of a perfectly preserved historic town.

Day 2 – The Interior Heartland & Atmospheric Layers

  • Sunrise in Motovun: An early departure to catch the famous "Fog Sea" of the Mirna Valley. Technical focus on layering, telephoto compression, and atmospheric depth from elevated viewpoints.

  • Grožnjan – The Artist’s View: A session dedicated to street photography and "The Second Look"—finding unique perspectives and minimalist details in a highly textured environment.

  • Pićan – Authenticity & Structure: Exploration of this overlooked hill town. Focus on clean architectural structures and documentary-style photography away from tourist density.

Day 3 – Natural Formations & The Istrian Archipelago

  • The Elevated View (Lim Fjord): A morning session focused on one of Istria’s most distinctive natural formations. We work on layered landscape compositions and the relationship between water, forest, and elevation.

  • Coastal Vistas: Exploration of alternative vantage points along the archipelago. This day focuses on wide-angle perspectives and the interaction between the limestone coast and the Adriatic.

  • Technical Mid-Point Review: A dedicated session to review the work produced so far, identifying "visual gaps" to fill during the final two days.

Day 4 – The Roman & Coastal Frontier (Exclusive to 5-Day)

  • Pula (Architecture): A deep dive into Roman history. We focus on the powerful structural lines, shadows, and high-contrast environments of the Arena and surrounding urban elements.

  • Cape Kamenjak (Nature): A move toward minimalist coastal landscapes. We focus on the rugged cliffs, the open horizon, and "Zero-Distraction" compositions at the southernmost tip of the peninsula.

Day 5 – The Final Narrative & Curation

  • The "Second Look": We revisit the client’s favorite location (Motovun or Rovinj) to refine a specific shot or concept based on the week’s progress and improved lighting conditions.

  • Portfolio Curation: A final session moving from "taking pictures" to "curating a story." We select and sequence the top frames from the week to ensure a cohesive, professional visual narrative.

Transportation and Driver

All Istria photographic experiences require transportation with a professional driver.

I work with a trusted local VIP van and driver who are familiar with the region and understand the specific timing and access requirements for photographic work. This allows us to move efficiently between locations, access restricted areas, and remain fully focused on photography without interruptions related to driving or parking.

The driver service costs €390 per day and includes up to 250 km per day..

This service is compulsory for all workshops unless clients prefer to arrange their own professional driver and vehicle. If clients choose to use their own driver, coordination details must be agreed in advance to ensure compatibility with the photographic schedule.

Driver fees are paid directly to the driver.

Accommodation is not included. Clients are free to choose their preferred hotel.
