The empty chair across the canal is the detail that holds my attention here. The brick archway gives the eye somewhere to go, but the chair gives it somewhere to stay. Around them, the worn walls, green water and reflections make a photograph from an otherwise ordinary corner of Venice. When choosing where to walk with a camera, I look for places that leave room for this kind of observation. You can spend an entire morning moving between famous views, but there is also value in covering less ground and paying closer attention to what is in front of you. Autumn in Szentgyörgyvölgy, in the Őrség. Mist softens the edges of the village, but the green of the fields holds its own. Among the trees and scattered roofs, the church tower gives the eye somewhere to settle. What draws me to this scene is how much remains visible even as the distance disappears. There is enough detail to explore, and enough left unresolved to keep looking. #orseg #hungary

Very happy to be heading back to lovely Nagyrév later this week. I’m working on a photographic writing project here, and I’ve been looking forward to returning ever since my first visit. I’ll keep the details to myself a little longer, while the work takes shape. For now, I’m looking forward to walking these streets again, spending more time with the people I’m getting to know, and seeing what I notice on a second visit. Calle dei Albanesi, Venice. Everyone knows the front of the Danieli. The Riva, the lobby, the lagoon view with a price tag. This is the other side. A narrow calle, a stone wall, a single lamp, and the name cut into the lintel. The calle does what Venice does best. It squeezes you into the dark, then opens onto light and water. San Giorgio waits at the end, small and exact. The grand hotels sell the view. The side doors keep the story. #venice #leica #photography #workshop

The Christmas lights are only part of the picture. In Budapest, a passing tram, reflections on wet streets, and mist-softened buildings can give an evening photograph its character. The interesting decisions are where to stand, what to leave out and whether to hold the movement still or let it become part of the frame. I’m running photography workshops in Budapest this December. We’ll work on reading the light, finding stronger compositions and making deliberate choices as the city changes around us. These photographs hint at the possibilities, though each evening brings its own conditions and opportunities.
