Venice is often photographed for what it reveals. On mornings like this, it becomes more interesting for what it hides. Fog removes the familiar landmarks and leaves only rhythm: gondolas, wooden poles, reflections, and one gondolier moving through the frame. With a Leica and a single focal length, the challenge is not finding more to include. It is deciding what the photograph can do without. Most people walk past this. An old door, a closed shop, two people sitting on folding stools. Nothing is happening, technically. And that's exactly why most people never stop. Because the scene isn't the photo. What the scene is quietly saying is. Look at the size of that doorway against the two of them. The gate pulled halfway open, the ZÁRVA sign, closed, right behind them. A man playing a small keyboard for no one in particular. A woman waiting, or maybe just resting, her hands folded the exact same way his instrument is held. None of that is dramatic. No one would call it a decisive moment in the classic sense. But black and white strips away everything that would have distracted from it, the color of his shirt, the color of the door, all of it. What's left is just shape, gesture, and scale. A huge closed door and two small people who haven't given up on the day. That's the whole argument for shooting street in black and white. Color tells you where you are. Most people photograph Bled from the same three spots. Same viewpoint, same church tower, same green water, same postcard. And that's exactly why so many Bled photos feel identical. Because the view isn't the photo. What frames the view is. Here I let a branch cut into the top of the frame instead of cropping it out. It felt wrong at first, something in the way. But it gave the eye a way in, a ceiling to look under before finding the tower. That's the difference between photographing a famous place and photographing your version of it. Anyone can stand where everyone stands. The photo starts when you use what's actually around you, leaves, branches, a boat passing at the wrong moment that turns out to be the right one. This is what I work through with people in Slovenia. Most people are still asleep when this happens. The fog sits low in the valley, holding the shape of the hills before the sun has decided anything yet. And that's exactly why so many landscape photos feel like the place, but not the moment. Because the light isn't the photo. The fog lifting is. Here I got to the ridge in the dark, coffee still in hand, and waited. No color yet, no gold, just grey settling into the valley floor. Then the sky started to shift, and the fog began pulling apart in slow motion, revealing one hill, then another, then the tree line at the bottom. That window lasts maybe ten minutes. Miss it and you get a nice hill. Catch it and you get a valley that's still deciding what it wants to be. This is the rhythm I build the Istria workshop around. Not chasing golden hour for the color.
